You’ve probably heard about the issues on sustainability and population growth. Certainly, having a compact growing environment present with the Tower Garden helps. Using aeroponics—the same technology NASA uses—Tower Garden grows plants with only water and nutrients rather than dirt. Research has found aeroponic systems grow plants three times faster and produce 30% greater yields on average.
But, along with the higher yields, what are some solutions to preserving your yield?
Preserve Produce to Enjoy Another Day
Bigger vegetable and herb yields are among the many benefits of growing with Tower Garden. But as you harvest, you may discover you don’t have enough room—in your kitchen or your stomach—for all that your garden gives. Here are 4 things you can do with all that extra produce:
Dry. The most popular preservation method for herbs, drying is easy! While some people use an oven or a dehydrator, all you really need to dry your herbs is a place to hang them for a few days. They’re ready for storage when they easily crumble upon touch.
Freeze. If you have the space, freezing fresh fruits and veggies is an inexpensive and effective way to save them (and their nutritional value). Just blanch—which means to briefly boil—the produce, and allow it to dry prior to freezing.
Can. Canning requires a little more work and materials than other methods, but the results can be delicious: dill pickles, pasta sauce, salsa and much more! For more information on how to can produce from your garden, we recommend Organic Gardening Magazine’s canning guide.
Give. If all else fails, share the wealth! Give some of your harvest to friends or donate it to a local food pantry.
Prevent Problems by Keeping Your Tower Garden Clean
Regular maintenance plays a vital role in keeping your Tower Garden problem-free. In addition to monthly routine tasks— such as trimming roots, flushing debris out of the pump, and clearing the shower cap holes—it’s a good idea to clean your entire Tower Garden in between plantings.
Not sure how to clean your Tower Garden? The process is simple:
- Drain the reservoir.
- Remove plants and net pots from Tower Garden.
- Disassemble the Tower sections.
- Discard plant material and clean net pots for future use.
- Unscrew the blue hose from the reservoir lid and pump.
- Place everything in the reservoir, and fill it with warm soapy water.
- Allow the Tower sections to soak in the reservoir for 30 minutes.
- Scrub all parts with soapy water.
